Green Revolution –An Evolution of Soil Health Destruction
Black Spots in Green Revolution
Black spots in Green revolution are the truth behind technology transformation. Necessity is the mother of invention is common proverb that gives a thrust to innovation. If Necessity is the mother of invention then endless wants is the father of destruction .Black spots in green revolution is infact the foot prints of destruction.
The Green revolution has laid the foundation for technology transformation in India. The country was facing the food grains deficit and hence the transformation was the necessity.
No doubt! the wings of green revolution had made a successful flight to address the food grain deficit problem but the green revolution has lead to evolution of soil health destruction. Black spots in green revolution has masked the success of green revolution
Indiscriminate Use of Chemicals in Green Revolution
Indiscriminate use of chemicals in green revolution has failed to set its positive mark in the benefit of Indian agriculture, especially in long run. The introduction of new crop varieties in green revolution has opened the way for intensification of agriculture but the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides has blocked the sustainable growth.
The technological transformation was based on use of chemical pesticides and increased application of irrigation. The farming community failed to Understand the foundation of green revolution .They were unaware of the fact that the demand for increased application of chemicals (in the form of pesticides & fertilizer) and increased irrigation for the successful implementation of green revolution was going to be hazardous in long run.
Most of the farmer got a comfort zone in green revolution in the form of enhanced food grain production. They settled in short term gains. The green revolution has infact given a thrust to an evolution of temptation for more production through indiscriminate use of chemicals.
This was the time when the hidden wings of green revolution were visible in the form long term destruction to soil health. The black spots of green revolution still have its footprints and need to be removed at earliest before it stretched further.
